I’ve been contemplating my state of stagnation But it’s been a while since I walked a mile Living at our hardware store Bolted to the concrete floor It’s an industry Of family And at the end of every day I get out my guitar and play The song goes on I’m no longer young All the days seem quite the same and all these people know my name But my lovers face Ain’t in this place Chorus: Maybe, in the morning There’s a new tune on the wind Maybe, in the morning It’ll carry me to him Used to be an honest day Stocking shelves, learning trades But it ain’t the same Since the Depot came Inventory, prices cut And still the numbers don’t add up And so resigned To the For Sale sign Nuts and nails and paper clips Nothing is an easy fix They still intrude And we still get screwed Dusty boxes, crumpled bills Painting all the window sills And beyond the sign A horizon line Chorus Turning over silent page The songs we sing, the wars we wage It’s the stormy kind Between heart and mind Time to fold up all the rules Time to put away these tools There’s coffee on There’s a brand new dawn I love this town, I love this place And from the warmth of this embrace I step outside Eyes opened wide All I need is this guitar All I need is in my heart I’m ready now I can sing outloud Chorus x2

All the earth across this land The soil that was turned by our grand parents hands Has slowly become barren and poisonous Monoculture salinized bowl of dust The organic oasis in this desert land Sure needs the government to lend a hand ‘cause the people still shop at the Big Box store Searching out bargains on soy and corn Oh, tell me when will this madness stop Money, like cream, all floats to the top The farmer ain’t in the dell The farmer ain’t in the dell I say Hi Ho the dairy-o The farmer lives in hell Oh, the farmer lives in hell The big storm cloud on the horizon plain That ain’t the weather, oh it ain’t the rain No, that’s the coming of the GMO And there’s hell to pay when the seeds do blow The lab coat farmers and the CEO’s Seem to be the only ones making the dough Those corporations causing so much harm It’s the long slow death of the family farm Those industrial giants doing what they please Monsanto takes the wife, the child, the dog, the cat, the mouse, the cheese… The farmer ain’t in the dell The farmer ain’t in the dell I say Hi Ho the dairy-o The farmer lives in hell Oh, the farmer lives in hell I like the birds and the honeybees I prefer my vegetables pesticide-free I like my chicken to have seen the sun I like my milk raw, and my eggs free run I prefer my salmon to have swum in the sea And I don’t like meat from a factory I like to look my farmer in the eye Yeah, I’ll keep rooting for the little guy If we know the value of what our health and land is worth To do right by our bodies is to do right by the earth The farmer ain’t in the dell The farmer ain’t in the dell I say Hi Ho the dairy-o The farmer lives in hell Oh, the farmer lives in hell The farmer ain’t in the dell The farmer ain’t in the dell… I say Hi Ho the dairy-o The farmer lives in hell Oh, the farmer lives in hell

Dusty Daisy 03:46
Dusty daisy, growing by the road Dusty daisy, what answers do you hold? Won’t you show me what you got Oh, does he love me or love me not? If you gave me your petals to pluck Dusty daisy, would you bring me luck? Pick those petals one by one Oh, dusty daisy in the summer sun I’ve been waiting all summer long Waiting to sing that sweetheart song Now I fear I’m running out of time… Oh dusty daisy, will he be mine? Dusty daisy, looking sad and sweet Dusty daisy, wilting in the heat I’ve been dusty just like you Oh, dusty daisy I’m wilting too

I couldn’t see it comin’ I couldn’t see it comin’ I could not see that freight train comin’ down the line I was down at the old fair grounds When Danny came my way Said “Jenny dear, I greatly fear, your man has gone astray. I saw your darlin’ Liam with pretty Emmalou” And I said “Dan, you are mistaken I can’t believe that’s true.” So I went back to the old traintracks To see what I could see And there they were- he was with her- she’d stolen him from me A howl of hell escaped me, the knife was in my back My heart it was ripped open, My head was on the track. Chorus x 2 Emmalou and Liam too, you promised honesty How could you be so untrue after all you said to me? As Liam turned to face me, I got a clearer view And he said “Jenny, don’t you realise? She is prettier than you.” And so my heart was torn apart And thought it would remain Full of regret I can’t forget that heavy speeding train Emmalou and Liam, they ruined everything While I am laying helpless I hear she got his ring. Chorus All the days did slip away The nights I often cried Faithful Dan, that honest man Was often by my side Till one day Danny knelt down With a big ol’ grin And suddenly it hit me- I was in love with him

Butterfly 04:22
Today I want to be the wind And lift up through the trees Filling up the vacancy And dancing as the breeze Today I want to feel the ground Like your hands years before Take the dirt up in my palms Turn it to something more Today my head is empty but my heart is full Today I want to lay down but I can’t keep still Today I feel your blood is running wild in me And I believe, I believe you are free I believe, I believe you are free. Today the earth becomes the sea The sea become the sky Today there’s no more questions No more when or why And if the rain falls soft on me And a breeze lifts in the air I’ll take the chill down in my bones And sing pour vous grand-mere Today there is a butterfly That flutters near my heart She’s shaking off this old cocoon And hastens to depart And suddenly a rainbow from her wings has sprung And she’s flying, oh she’s flying to the sun She’s flying oh she’s flying to the sun.

Snow Angel 03:59
Our love was fierce and sweetly sung The kind that gets you when you’re young You found some power in the tiny lines And so the fracture grew with time I loved you just as I had before But I knew that you loved it more You realized where the line was drawn You realized I was moving on Chorus Oh oh oh Oh why’d you have to go Why’d you have to go and be a snow angel? (x2) The snow fell softly through the night Dawn revealed a brilliant light You climbed the hill up to the tracks You felt the sunshine on your back And did you hear, hear my voice? Did you regret, regret this choice? What did you feel? What did you see? And as you fell, did you come free? (Chorus x 2) All those times that you showed up shaking, Longing for some kind of liberty You know that my heart was breaking Waiting for the person that you could never be I followed you into the stream So much sorrow, so much blame And there I stayed for years and years Till the river swelled with tears And I washed up upon the shore And there my heart began to thaw I knew the beating had begun And so I turned and felt the sun

Oh, their eyes are golden petals Folding open to the sun Blades of grass rake through their fingers Drops of dew upon their tongues Chorus: Oh, how can I catch them Oh, they’re far too fast for me Oh, they’re slipping through my fingers Like cool running water, like dandelion seeds Oh, they fight with fierce abandon Oh, they lay the fields low In the dawn they chase the angels Down where salmon berries grow Chorus Oh, they’re leaning in the morning Buzzing like the bumblebees Oh, they learn as fast as lightening Oh, they bolt like summer weeds

I don’t care if the dishes aren’t done Let’s sit back and have some fun We’ll relax once we’ve begun Kitchen floor Mixin up a melody, cooking up a tune Beating out a rhythm with a pot and spoon If you’re not dancing, well, you will be soon Kitchen floor Moon is up, kids are down I’m tuning up the guitar if you wanna come around Play until our fingers are sore Kicking up some dust on the dirty kitchen floor We’re a-serving up a real sweet song If I start to sing it, maybe you will sing along Legs are limber, voices strong Kitchen floor Put away your worries, put away the gloom Put away the dust pan, put away the broom Dancing feet will sweep around the room Kitchen floor Moon is up…. Lick your lips and stamp your feet We’ve been making jam and it tastes so sweet Play until the night’s complete Kitchen floor

Updraft 04:28
You, you are a fir tree Stoic and strong Consistent and calm Silent till breaking free This home, home’s like a bird’s egg Precious and snug Full of life, full of love But so easy to break Chorus: So won’t you sew me some wings I’ll sew you some in return For all that we’ve learned Grow cold and get burned If we live and we love and we laugh We’ll catch the updraft I, I am the west wind Melodies borne Or simmering storm Not knowing what I’m blowing in My heart, it’s a kaleidoscope One little twist The whole picture shifts Fractures of light and rainbows Chorus Bridge: And when the morning comes We’ll be safe in bed Dreams are tethered softly With these golden threads Our love, love’s like a fire So warm when it glows But when the door’s closed Cold and aching for air And we, we are the embers Lights in the dark Ashes and sparks Cycles of death and rebirth Chorus

Silver Spoon 03:17
Walking with you would be the sweetest thing Beneath the popcorn blossoms in the spring In summer, we can sit in the shade By the lazy river of lemonade In autumn we will walk and kick Golden leaves of potato chips When winter brings the frosty cold We can throw snowballs of marshmallow Take me to the edge of heaven on a silver spoon Oh how sweet to be with you beneath the tangerine sun and the honeydew moon In the morning we’ll walk beneath Shady lanes of broccoli trees Afternoon clouds will bring the dripping rain We’ll tilt up our chins to sip the champagne When the blackberry night fills our sleepy heads We’ll get wrapped up like burritos in bed Curled up like two peas in a pod Fuzzy like peaches and apricots Take me to the edge of heaven on a silver spoon Oh how sweet to be with you beneath the tangerine sun and the honeydew moon Bridge: You’re as sweet as baked Alaska, chocolate sundaes, blueberry pie You’re soup for the soul, feast for the eyes Life is more delicious when you’re by my side You can be my barley, I will be your malt You can be my pepper, I will be your salt Hand in hand and cheek to cheek We’ll dance like apples on a tree Swaying and spinning seeds on the wind We’ll laugh like we had too much gin And should this world ever make you cry I’ll kiss the honey tears from your almond eyes Take me to the edge of heaven on a silver spoon Oh how sweet to be with you beneath the tangerine sun and the honeydew moon Oh how sweet to be with you beneath the tangerine sun and the honeydew moon

about

Recorded in January 2014, and released in July, this is Genevieve Charbonneau's first solo album. A collection of beautiful original songs, Updraft is inspired by a decade of homesteading in the Cowichan Valley, Vancouver Island.

Genevieve's voice is "at once reedy, full, playful, caressing and honest, simple and complex and tells a story that is draws one in. It is impossible when listening to this album to not be moved in some way across a broad spectrum of emotions. After dozens of replays, I have actually discovered a problem with Updraft…
It is, quite simply, not long enough…
I am a junky in search of more tracks." (Joe Chauncy, Boxwood, Seattle)
